CD REVIEW: CHICKENFOOT “CHICKENFOOT”

Once you’ve finished laughing at the name, you can get excited about this super-group featuring a pair of ex-Halen bandmates (Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony), a guitar wizard (Joe Satriani) and a Red Hot Chili Pepper (Chad Smith).

This release features straight ahead rockers with a lot of influences, as you’d expect with the combined resumes of this bunch. The production by Andy Johns captures the loose, raw energy of a bunch of rock’s all stars getting together to jam. With Sammy at the mic, the tunes are arena-ready.

My one complaint is that there’s no obvious single, but does not stop the album from rocking hard and making for a very satisfying listen. A must for fans of Hagar-era Van Halen and recommended for rockers of all ages.

  1. Do you think it's as good as Halen? I heard a couple of the tunes, and I was mildly impressed. Your right though, no obvious single. That might oddly enough end up being it's strength.

Satch is not as good as Eddie at writing the rock guitar motif per se. I always thought one of Satchs weaknesses was his some of his rhythm section parts on his solo stuff was boring. The guy is one of the best in the business at creating a fantastic guitar solo, and melody. Satch surprised me a little on this CD. Not as good at rhythm guitar parts as Eddie Van Halen, but he's a lot better than I thought he would be. The rhythm parts are good.

  2. It's a solid rock album. I always liked the flow of the Hagar-Halen albums-there's was always at least one good pop-leaning single that still managed to rock. This is just missing that but worth picking up.
